Project notes

What the archive shows.

A raised deck, finished in black.

Ben laid this deck in Trex composite, a board that holds its color and takes Pennsylvania winters without staining or sealing. He raised it on posts to meet the walk-out and look over the wooded lot behind the house.

Black aluminum railing runs the full perimeter and keeps the sightlines open to the trees. Trex stair treads carry down to the yard, with riser lights set into the steps for footing after dark.

A covered cedar cathedral roof.

One end of the deck sits under a covered structure framed with a cedar open-gable cathedral roof. Stained cedar rafters meet at a king-post peak, so the ceiling reads as warm timber against the black railing and boards.

A before photo shows the same wall as bare framing and dirt. Ben turned that footprint into a covered outdoor room that holds up from spring through fall.
